Expanding File Folders
Expanding file folders are an excellent storage option for important papers and documents which you are likely to need at hand sometime in the future. There are many options available when buying an expanding file and you should consider your needs before making your purchase.
First of all, you need to decide on the material you want your expanding file to be made out of. This is largely dependent on what you plan to do with it, how often it will be used, and your budget. The most common kind is made of paper or thin cardboard, including both the outer covers and the interior dividers. Paper folders are generally the cheapest but also the least durable, as constant opening, closing and use of the file folder will start to create wear and tear after some time. IF you’re planning to use the folder for long term storage with little contact, this could be a good option, but if you plan to use it on a daily basis, paper folders will probably start to come apart quicker than you would like.
The next option, which is also common, is a plastic expanding file folder, consisting of a solid plastic cover and either solid or flexible plastic inserts or dividers. Being plastic, these folders are nearly indestructible and will stand through almost any amount of use and abuse you can throw at them. They are also available in a range of colors and styles, so you’re likely to be able to find something that suits you. They are generally a little more expensive than paper ones, but still well within most budgets.
Top of the range expanding files are made of leather. As you can no doubt imagine, these folders look very good and create an excellent impression on anyone who sees them. They are long-lasting and pleasant to use, and create a very exclusive and professional atmosphere in an office setting. The downside, obviously, is the cost, with leather expanding file folders often going for close to $100 each. This is not something you buy for junk storage in your closets, but if you want something luxurious and stylish to store your regular use papers in, this could be a good option.
Other things to consider when buying expanding file folders include the number of pockets. This is important and will depend largely on what you plan to do with the file and how you want to organize things. Folders start from 4 or 5 pockets and can go up to 30 or more, so you need to consider how you want to use the file folder before making your purchase. Another important thing to look for is the use of tabs on the dividers in the file folders. Although they are included in most expanding file folders, some do not have tabs on the dividers, which makes it very difficult to search through when you’re looking for a specific document. Some also have pre-designated tabs (usually alphabetically, so either A-Z or using two letters per tab) while some have blank tabs which you can fill in for yourself. Again, which is best for you depends on what you plan to use the file for, so make sure you know in advance.
Some folders also have carry handles or some other way to transport them easily. If this is something you think you will need to do often, you may want to invest a little bit more in getting something that will be comfortable to carry. Finally, remember to note how the file folder closes. Some folders have very secure clips which will stay closed no matter what, while some simply rest in the closed position but have nothing stopping them from being opened or from things falling out.
Think carefully about your needs before going ahead and buying an expanding file folder. Then, when you do get one, you’ll be sure to enjoy it more and get better use out of it.
